Scoring guide
How we score
Last updated: August 20, 2026
Nutriva grades packaged products from the information on the label — ingredient lists and nutrition facts. We do not run laboratory tests, take samples, or measure contaminants in a lab. Our letter grades are an analysis of what manufacturers disclose, so you can compare options while you shop.
For the exact thresholds behind each deduction, see Levels & Limits.
What a letter grade means
Every graded product starts at 100 points. We subtract points for harmful or concerning ingredients, unbalanced nutrition (per 100 g), and ultra-processing when we can detect it. Remaining points map to a letter from A (best) to F (worst), including plus/minus steps such as A−, B+, and C−.
The letter is designed to be quick to read in the aisle. Tapping a grade in the app shows each deduction that shaped the result.
What we analyze
Ingredients
We parse the ingredient list and classify known additives and substances by concern level (high, medium, or low). Each flagged ingredient can reduce the grade, with caps so a long list of the same severity does not overwhelm the score unfairly.
Nutrition facts
When nutrition values are available (per 100 g), we look at sugar, salt, saturated fat, fiber, and protein. High or moderate levels of sugar, salt, or saturated fat lower the grade; low fiber or low protein (on solid foods) can also lower it. Beverage sugar thresholds differ from solid foods.
Processing
If a product is identified as ultra-processed (NOVA group 4), we apply an additional deduction. This reflects how heavily the product is formulated, not a lab assay.
When we show “Not enough data”
If we cannot evaluate either ingredient risk data or usable nutrition values, we do not invent a letter grade. Instead we show Not enough data. That is more honest than guessing from marketing claims alone.
Letter bands
After deductions, remaining points map as follows:
| Points left | Grade |
|---|---|
| 93–100 | A |
| 87–92 | A− |
| 80–86 | B+ |
| 73–79 | B |
| 67–72 | B− |
| 60–66 | C+ |
| 53–59 | C |
| 47–52 | C− |
| 40–46 | D+ |
| 33–39 | D |
| 27–32 | D− |
| 0–26 | F |
Legacy 0–100 score
Nutriva also keeps a separate compatibility score out of 100 with labels such as Safe or Moderate. That score is independent of the letter grade. New product views prioritize the letter grade when enough data exists; the legacy score remains available for continuity.
Important limits
- Grades are general information based on public product data and our analysis rules — not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
- Labels can be incomplete, outdated, or wrong. When in doubt, check the physical package.
- Individual needs differ (allergies, medical diets, age). Use Nutriva as a shopping aid, not a substitute for professional guidance.
